Awards




Over the years, several members of EVOCINV have received different awards. The following is a list (in cronological order) of such awards which have made us very proud of the quality of our research:





  1. Nareli Cruz Cortés received the Best Paper Award in the category Novel Smart Engineering System Design Award at the international conference Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering (ANNIE'2001) held in St. Louis, Missouri in November, 2001.

  2. Gregorio Toscano Pulido's MSc thesis was awarded a Second Place in the national theses competition (in the category of masters thesis in computer science) held at the XV National Congress and First International Congress on Computer Science organized by the National Association of Educative Institutions in Computer Science (ANIEI for its acronym in Spanish), in October 2002.

  3. Efrén Mezura Montes was the First Runner-Up in the Theoretical Developments in Computational Intelligence Award contest celebrated during the international conference Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering (ANNIE'2003) held in St. Louis, Missouri in November, 2003.

  4. Ricardo Landa Becerra's MSc thesis was awarded the First Place in the national theses competition (in the category of masters thesis in computer science) held at the XVI National Congress and Second International Congress on Computer Science organized by the National Association of Educative Institutions in Computer Science (ANIEI for its acronym in Spanish), in October 2003.

  5. Nareli Cruz Cortés received the Best Paper Award at the Graduate Student Workshop celebrated during the 2003 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2003), which took place in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in July 2003.

  6. Gregorio Toscano Pulido was nominated for the Best Paper Award in the track Artificial Life, Evolutionary Robotics, and Adaptive Behavior of the 2004 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2004), which was held in Seattle, Washington, USA, in June 2004.



  7. Efrén Mezura Montes received the Best Presentation Award at the Graduate Student Workshop celebrated during the 2004 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2004), which took place in Seattle, Washington, USA, in June 2004.

  8. Mario Villalobos-Arias was nominated for the Best Student Paper Award at the 2005 IEEE Swarm Intelligence Symposium, which was held in Pasadena, California, USA, in June 2005.

  9. Ricardo Landa Becerra received the Best Paper Award at the Graduate Student Workshop celebrated during the 2005 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2005), which took place in Washington DC, USA, in June 2005.

  11.   12.   13. Luis Vicente Santana Quintero was the First Runner-Up in the Theoretical Developments in Computational Intelligence Award contest celebrated during the international conference Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering (ANNIE'2005) held in St. Louis, Missouri in November, 2005.


  14. Antonio López Jaimes was awarded the Second Place in the national theses competition (in the category of Masters thesis in computer science) held at the XVIII National Congress and Fourth International Congress on Computer Science organized by the National Association of Educative Institutions in Computer Science (ANIEI for its acronym in Spanish), in October 2005.

  15. Gregorio Toscano Pulido was awarded the First Place in the national theses competition (in the category of PhD thesis in computer science) held at the XIX National Congress and Fifth International Congress on Computer Science organized by the National Association of Educative Institutions in Computer Science (ANIEI for its acronym in Spanish), in October 2006.


  16. Oliver Schütze received the Best Paper Award from the Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization track at the 2007 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2007), held in London, UK, in July, 2007.

  17. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the 2007 National Research Award in the area of Exact Sciences in October, 2007. This award is granted by the Mexican Academy of Science to researchers under the age of 40 who have shown an outstanding performance, and is the second most prestigious scientific award granted in Mexico. This is the first time (since the inception of the award, in 1961) that a computer scientist receives this important award in the area of exact sciences. The award was delivered to Dr. Carlos A.   18.   19. Luis Vicente Santana Quintero received the Best Paper Award at the Graduate Student Workshop celebrated during the 2008 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2008), which took place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in July 2008.
  20. Oliver Schütze received, for the second year in a row, the Best Paper Award from the Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization track at the 2008 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2008), held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in July, 2008.

  21. Saül Zapotecas Martínez was awarded the Second Place in the national theses competition (in the category of masters thesis in computer science) held at the XXI National Congress and Seventh International Congress on Computer Science organized by the National Association of Educative Institutions in Computer Science (ANIEI for its acronym in Spanish), in October 2008.
  22. A paper co-authored by Mario Garza Fabre, Gregorio Toscano Pulido and Carlos A. Coello Coello, received the Best Paper Award, at the international conference Artificial Evolution 2009 (EA'2009), which took place in Strasbourg, France, in 26-28 October, 2009.

  23. In November, 2009, Luis Vicente Santana-Quintero received the Arturo Rosenblueth Award 2009 to the best PhD thesis in the area of Technology and Engineering Sciences. His PhD thesis advisor was Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello. This award is granted by CINVESTAV-IPN to the best PhD theses from this institution. The award is granted each year in four areas and consists of a diploma (for both, the PhD student and his/her thesis advisor) and a check (only for the PhD student). Luis is the first PhD graduate of the Computer Science Department at CINVESTAV-IPN in receiving this important award. Some pictures of the event can be seen here.

  24. Adriana Lara López received the Best Paper Award at the Graduate Student Workshop celebrated during the 2010 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2010), which took place in Portland, Oregon, USA, in July, 2010.

  25. In October, 2010, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the Medal to the Scientific Merit granted by México City's congress. Some pictures of the event as well as some press notes (in Spanish) can be found here.

  26. Since January 1, 2011, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello is an IEEE Fellow for for contributions to multi-objective optimization and constraint-handling techniques. Being a Fellow is the highest distinction granted by the IEEE to its members. No more than one tenth of the 1% of its voting members can obtain this distinction each year.

  27. In November, 2011, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the award Ciudad Capital: Heberto Castillo 2011 in Basic Science, in the category of scientists who are 45 years old or less. This award is granted by the government of Mexico City upon the recommendation of the Institute of Science and Tecnology of México City.   28. In September 2012, Adriana Lara López received the First Place in the Engineering Award 2012 in the category Graduate Thesis, within the area Computational Systems. This award is granted by the government of México City upon the recommendation of the Institute of Science and Tecnology of México City.
  29. Adriana Lara López obtained the First Place in the XXV National Contest of Theses in Computer Science and Information Systems 2012 (in the category of PhD thesis in Computer Science), organized by the National Association of Educative Institutions in Computer Science (ANIEI for its acronym in Spanish), in October, 2012.   30. Adriana Lara López obtained the First Place in the National Contest of PhD Theses in Artificial Intelligence organized by the Mexican Society of Artificial Intelligence. The award was delivered to Adriana during the banquet of the 11th Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (MICAI'2012), which took place in San Luis Potosí, México.

  31. In October 2012, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello obtained the Scopus Award Mexico 2012 in the area of engineering. This award was granted due to his "high h-index, and due to his numerous published works and citations received during the last 5 years". Some photos of the awards banquet can be seen here.

  32. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the 2012 National Medal of Science and Arts in the area of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. This is the most important award that a mexican scientist can obtain in his/her country, and is granted by the President of Mexico. This is only the second time (since 1945) in which a computer scientist receives this award and Dr. Coello is the first to obtain it in "exact sciences".   33. In December 2012, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello obtained the National Award to the Socio-Humanistic, Scientific and Technological Research UASLP 2012 from the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, in México.   34. In June 2013, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the 2013 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award during the awards banquet of the 2013 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC'2013), which took place in Cancún, México. This is one of the prestigious IEEE Technical Field Awards, which is given for outstanding early to mid-career contributions to technologies holding the promise of innovative applications. Dr. Coello is the first Latin American to receive this award, since its inception in 2002.

  35. In June 2013, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello and his co-authors (Dr. Adriana Lara López, Dr. Oliver Schütze and Dr. Gustavo Sánchez) of the paper entitled "HCS: A New Local Search Strategy for Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithms", received the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award for 2010 (bestowed in 2013). This is the first time that Latin American authors received this important award, granted to the best paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation during the year 2010.

  36. In October 2013, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello was named one of the 30 Quo+Discovery Minds 2013, in an event that took place at the National Museum of Anthropology, in Mexico City. In this same event, Dr. Coello was symbolically named one of the 10 Knowledge Embassadors 2013. Some pictures of the event as well as some videos (in Spanish) can be found here.

  37. In December 2014, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received one of the prestigious Cátedras Marcos Moshinsky 2013-2014 in the area of Mathematics, in a ceremony that took place at the Institute of Physics of UNAM, in Mexico City. You can see some photos of the ceremony here.

  38. In May 2015, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello and his co-authors (Dr. Adriana Lara López, Dr. Oliver Schütze and Xavier Esquivel, MSc) of the paper entitled "Using the Averaged Hausdorff Distance as a Performance Measure in Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization", received the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award for 2012 (bestowed in 2015).

  39. Raquel Hernández Gómez received the Best Paper Award at the Student Workshop celebrated during the 2016 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2016), which took place in Denver, Colorado, USA, in July, 2016.

  40. Raquel Hernández Gómez and her co-authors (Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello and Dr. Enrique Alba Torres) received the Best Paper Award from the Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization track at the 2016 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2016), held in Denver, Colorado, USA, in July, 2016.

  41. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello was selected as one of the 22 recipients of the National Medal of Science and Arts who appears in the "Wall of Honor" that was inaugurated at the National Library of Science and Technology "Víctor Bravo Ahuja" of the National Polytechnical Institute.   42. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the 2016 The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Award in Engineering Sciences at the TWAS 14th General Conference & 28th General Meeting, which took place in Trieste, Italy, during November 27-29, 2018. You can see some photos of the ceremony here.

  46. On May 5th, 2023, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello was admitted to El Colegio Nacional in a ceremony that took place in the Aula Magna of El Colegio Nacional. You can see some photos of the ceremony here.

  47. On 19 July 2023, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the ACM Special Interest Group on Evolutionary Algorithms (SIGEVO) Outstanding Contribution Award. You can see some photos of the ceremony here.
