Conferencia: "Power-Performance Efficiency Study of Java Application Server." Conferenciante: Prof. Hitoshi Oi, University of Aizu, Japan.Lugar: Auditorio de Ingeniería Eléctrica.Día y hora: Martes 4 de abril. 4 PM.Abstract: Power management problem first attracted the interests of portable device designers; less power consumption means a longer battery life. Nowadays, it is also a significant and 'hot' topic for large scale server systems (or data centers). First, it is due to the ever increasing energy cost. The higher the CPU clock, the more power it dissipates and paying more electric bills. This higher power dissipation not only means more energy cost for computers, but also means the cost for cooling the system. Moreover, the heat from the computer systems limit the density of the machines in the data center. In this talk, the speaker will present the results from a case study of the power consumption and performance trade-offs in Java application servers. We use an industry-standard benchmark for the Java application servers, SPECjEnterprise2010, on two platforms with different CPUs, AMD Phenom~II and Intel Atom, We investigated the performance and power consumption behaviors against the increasing system size and the relative performance between Phenom vs Atom. Phenom is capable of dynamic frequency scaling (DFS) and we studied the effects of clock frequency control parameters on the performance and power consumption.Speaker's Bio: Hitoshi Oi is an assistant professor in Computer Software Department at the University of Aizu, Japan. He received PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering from University of South Florida. He also received BE and ME degrees from Meiji University, Japan. He worked for the industry as a computer architect (HAL Computer Systems) and as an LSI design engineer (Digital Equipment Corporation). His research interests include computer architecture, workload analysis and performance evaluation, LSI design and verification. http://web-ext.u-aizu.ac.jp/~hitoshi/ event date and time:
